Removal of Courts:
14/7/10 Why is it that this current council can not get anything right. We have this stirred up problem with the removal of the tennis courts when everyone in Tuross was happy with the way things were. Is it the councils aim to just disrupt the community on purpose just to draw attention away from their own incompetence? I am sure the council could be doing better things with its time, such as "Finishing the Tuross bridge project", "Getting our water supply to once again taste like Water", "Stop digging up the road between Batemans Bay and Narooma" ( This must be the most worked upon bit of road in Australia). "Fix the crime/policing problem in the area", just to name a few. But I suspect the major problems are too big for this council and its easier to mandate that we now take our own "EWASTE" to the tip and to close down facilities that are currently enjoyed. Mike Allen
17/5/10 Tennis is not the golden sport of Australia it was, with participation rates a fraction of past years, but to take away courts in Tuross is silly. The community has paid for the construction and every upgrade of those courts for 30+ years. As long as the costs of running and upgrading these courts is being met by the community, they should stay. The people who maintain the courts presently should be applauded for their good work - the courts and surrounding areas look a treat. say NO to closure. Ian Traynor
3/5/10 Elected members of the Council are there because of the residents in the Eurobodalla to best represent their interests. They are not there to become dictators.Do not vote for any Councilor who acts or ignores public opinion. The closure of two tennis courts at Tuross is a retrograde step.Don Heighway
23/4/10 We have been living here for 2 years now and have no intention of leaving. I have been holidaying here for 28 years and each holiday we always used the tennis courts. We would be using the tennis courts now, only we have 2 little ones at the moment which makes it difficult for us. We have every intention in the not too distant future of returning to our weekly tennis games and introducing our kids to the game of tennis also. I see no sense whatsoever in removing 2 of the tennis courts. They are there and I believe they should be left there. Why pay to have them removed? If the Council do not wish to look after these courts, then can they not be returned to the Community to be looked after. There is often talk of the "obesity epidemic" in Australia. It makes much more sense to leave sporting facilities, that are already there and that are wanted by the community, where they are. Lisa Spies
22/4/10 This is a ridiculous proposal - councils reducing facilities when more people need to be out and about being active. As more baby boomers retire to Tuross there will be more need for these facilites not less. I also don't like the idea of coucils taking over community facilities - originally provided by volunteer labour and money then doing away with them. Unfortunately we can't vote for council staff in elections but we can remind Councillors that we can either vote for them or not as we see what they support. Council staff should remember they are the servants of the community not in charge of it. Name withheld by Editor.
21/4/10 I would like to add my objections to the proposed removal of two courts from the Kyla Park recreational area.
As all the current tennis players are fully aware, the entire tennis complex was constructed by the local community made up of working men and women, whom as well as having to work and provide for their own families, willingly gave their own leisure time and effort to complete this popular and valuable asset to this town. For the Council to even consider removal of these courts is an absolute insult to all the people who have been, and those that are still, giving their time to continue maintenance on the courts and the immediate surrounds. It is unfortunate that if these courts are removed, people involved in tennis can no longer have any confidence ,trust or respect for their Council, which we are given to understand, are working for their ratepayers, not against them.
Patricia Carmichael. Treasurer/Secretary, Tuross Head Tennis Club Inc.
13/4/10 The proposal has no logic. The courts were built with community money on community land and have been nurtured and maintained by the community. Council took over control in 2005, did nothing for five years and now it seems as if they don't want the burden and responsibility, however, rather than offer them back to the community they now propose to remove two of the four on the basis of establishing more centralised and improved facilities in Moruya. Council has forecast that the population of Tuross is to rise by 1600 in the next decade. What will these newcomers use for recreational facilities? There is no public transport available to take players to Moruya. How will the older and younger members of the Tuross community travel there? Where does this sit within Council’s Social Plan that clearly identified the need to sustain activities suitable to our aging population that gave physical and social benefits Any attempt by Council to remove the tennis courts from this town will be well documented and long remembered. Lei Parker
31/3/10 I would encourage not only current tennis players, but all members of the Tuross community who have volunteered their time, labour and money to build and maintain these courts over the last 30 years, to view the Draft Recreation Strategy when it becomes available and submit their views to Council.
